Introduction :: The Global Prison Trends 2020 is an annual report jointly published by Penal Reform International (PRI) and Thailand Institute of Justice (TIJ). It provides an analysis of trends in the use of imprisonment globally, and specific prison management issues, with a focus on crime prevention and criminal justice. This year, the Special Focus section highlights Alternatives to Imprisonment. With prisons and justice systems facing unprecedented challenges brought by the COVID-19 global pandemic, this section emphasizes the need to look beyond prisons and adopt non-custodial measures to reduce prison overcrowding and address the long-term rehabilitation needs of offenders.
